Girl + Uniform + Horse + Sword = what is there not to like about this?

“Lady In The Dark Dress” - Illustration by Sam Spratt
Two of my many artsy New Year’s resolutions were to do more full-body portraits (as opposed to my usual chest-up) and to imagine up design elements I normally wouldn’t put much thought into — in this case, a dress.

Here’s a cropped version of the supposedly “unacceptably fat girl” I was drawing, by the way. I don’t think she looks “ugly” or “dumpy.” :( Am I that far off?
I’d say she looks great, but that’s pretty much my exact physique so I’d probably sound biased.
Ah, whatever, she looks great!
A quick doodle of a character in a novel I’ve been working on for the past year. Needed to get her more concrete in my head. She’s big and tall, with a squeaky little girl voice. She’s a warm and caring person who falls in love too easily and men take that for granted. She works in a circus as a snake charmer, but she’s developed allergies to snakes so she isn’t sure about her future.

I’m always looking for an excuse to draw chic ladies, and happily I was given one over the summer by french fashion designer Anne Fontaine! I designed their Bastille Day event postcard to showcase one of their signature bags and all-white outfits. More process on my blog!

This woman is a normal, beautiful human being. It’s time to train ourselves to get over the shock and awe of seeing people who look differently than us.
Little tutorial on composition/storytelling ! See my other/previous tutorials here !
